Black History Month: Daniel Hale opened Provident Hospital in 1891, the first black hospital in the country for patients who required inpatient care and a facility to train black nurses and doctors. In 1893, performed the first open-heart surgery, which was also the first time a chest cavity had ever been opened without the patient dying of an infection.
