National Medal of Honor Day!

Did you know: On March 25, 1863, Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton presented the first Medals of Honor (Army) to six members of “Andrews Raiders” for their volunteering and participation during an American Civil War raid in April of 1862.

 

Today in History: “Wise Men” advise President Johnson to negotiate peace in Vietnam

After two days of deliberation, the group reached a consensus: they advised against any further troop increases and recommended that the administration seek a negotiated peace.

 

Helen Fabela Chávez. Chávez was the wife of American civil rights activist Cesar Chávez. Helen, an activist, had a critical role in establishing the National Farm Workers Association, later changed to United Farm Workers (UFW). The UFW would establish humane working conditions for the nation’s farmworkers, many who at the time were American citizens of Mexican descent or Mexican immigrants, according to the Los Angeles Times.
